Colonizer Please: Producer JW Lucas Dragged For Victim Blaming Breonna Taylor

Colonizer Please: Producer JW Lucas Dragged For Victim Blaming Breonna Taylor”

Oprah Winfrey has made a decision to use her platform to bring awareness to the untimely death of Breonna Taylor.

Taylor was killed on March 13 when three Louisville Metro Police officers entered her home while issuing a no-knock warrant - a practice that has since been banned in Louisville and multiple other US cities. The 66-year-old TV host and magazine's founder dedicated the September issue of her magazine - one of its last ones in print - to Breonna Taylor.

Brett Hankinson, one of the Louisville officers involved in Taylor's death was sacked in June for "wantonly and blindly" shooting 10 rounds into Taylor's apartment as officers pursued a narcotics investigation with a no-knock warrant.

Not only does Winfrey dedicate her cover to Taylor, she has also penned down a powerful essay writing at length about the unfairness of it all.

"I think about Breonna Taylor often", Winfrey wrote. "She was just like you". The piece sheds light on Palmer's grief, on how she discovered her daughter had been shot after receiving a call from Taylor's boyfriend, Kenneth Walker, but did not know who had shot her until hearing it on the news. This officer blindly fired ten rounds from his gun, some of which went into the adjoining apartment.

"What I know for sure: We can't be silent", Winfrey said. "We have to use whatever megaphone we have to cry for justice", Winfrey wrote.

As if his tweets weren't problematic enough, Lucas then took to Instagram and appeared on live with activist Tamika Mallory where the two had a heated exchange which resulted in Lucas having the audacity to state that he was "more qualified to lead the Black Lives Matter movement" than Mallory before adding that he felt she was participating in the movement for "political gain".

Digital artist Alexis Franklin, 24, worked on the cover's portrait based on Taylor's photo.

Demonstrators have called for charges to be brought over Ms Taylor's death. "As a great-great-granddaughter of enslaved people, I know that in a different era my name would have been in someone's ledger". Breonna Taylor and too many others like her. I still can't grasp the concept of her being gone. When in need of fortification in times of crisis or challenge, and sometimes just to remind myself where I've come from, I read them aloud.
