COVID-19: Health officials announce 50 new cases, one new death”

The province announced one additional health-care facility outbreak today, affecting Dania Home in the Fraser Health region.

Provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry and Health Minister Adrian Dix announced the new cases and the new death in a written statement Friday afternoon.

Five individuals are now receiving treatment in hospital, two of whom are in intensive care.

"We offer our condolences to everyone who has lost their loved ones during the COVID-19 pandemic", they said. Five of the cases are epi-linked.

The health authority says that a staff member at Dania Home has tested positive for coronavirus.

The statement says there are now 3,641 COVID-19 cases in B.C. and 3,168 people have recovered.

Dania Home is a two-storey long-term care home with 102 beds. One other such outbreak is ongoing at Holy Family Hospital in Vancouver.

The home is one of three facilities on the Dania Care society's care campus, which also has assisted living and independent living buildings. The health authority says the staff member worked in one contained unit at the facility and did not work in other areas.

The ministry says most of the new cases are connected to an ongoing outbreak at a berry packing plant in the Fraser Valley.

Haida Gwaii, meanwhile, remains closed to non-residents as locals continue to deal with the community outbreak affecting the northern island archipelago.

"Let's socialize safely by keeping our groups small, using the layers of protection and giving everyone enough space to stay safe, whether at a backyard barbecue, on a friend's boat or enjoying a nearby park".

It's the second time in as many weeks that the number of new cases has topped 50, while the daily average has hovered around 30 in the weeks since B.C. entered Phase 3 of its reopening plan.

There have also been 63 cases identified in B.C. involving people who reside outside of Canada.
