Hamilton sees F1 career extending "at least three years" more after 2020

Hamilton sees F1 career extending

Speaking during an official video news conference ahead of this weekend's British Grand Prix, the world championship-leading Mercedes driver said he felt fit enough to stay on top and is motivated by his position as the sport's only black driver.

Mercedes have been dominant once again this season, with Hamilton now on for a hat-trick of wins after victories in Austria's Styrian Grand Prix and Hungary, while team-mate Valtteri Bottas won the opener at the Red Bull Ring.

Hamilton has been outspoken in his support for the anti-racism movement and expressed frustration and disappointment at the lack of leadership after the gesture in Hungary was rushed and disorganised, with some drivers not present.

When asked if he could guarantee his participation in the 2021 British GP to the fans who are barred from attending this year's event due to the coronavirus restrictions in the UK, Hamilton said: "Firstly, I don't think you can guarantee anything, but I plan to be here for sure". However in explaining his position Grosjean revealed he had felt duty bound as a director of the GPDA to represent the "seven or eight drivers who were not happy to carry on". The British Grand Prix, since I was a kid, was always a massive thing, it was nearly like a festival and turning up at the circuit with nobody here is quite peculiar, " Red Bull team principal Christian Horner said.

Grosjean, chairman of the GPDA, had conceded that "maybe I did it the wrong way" and Hamilton said he was impressed with "his approach to our conversation". I think you still have to earn the right to be here in terms of how you perform and continue to deliver. He originally reached out to me to talk after the last race, so I gave him a call and we had this great conversation and ultimately it was quite informative for the both of us - we learned that we actually have more in common than we perhaps thought.

"In terms of how long I go, that's a bit of an unknown", Hamilton said. "And he's clearly a caring person".

"I don't know when that will be but I don't see that happening in the short-term, in the next two or three years".

"It was a really good phone call - and I also said I wasn't very happy that the media came out and, on my social media, there were a lot of things about racism, and that I am a racist and whatsoever, which is absolutely wrong".

"I think we can hopefully get a good result there, historically it's been a pretty good track for the team, and it's one I really enjoy driving". "Giving us that extra time before the race we can show how united we are as a sport because other sports have done a better job at consistently doing that".

"That bit of time off was really a bit of breathing space". They have been really open-minded and I do think that it needs to continue during the year, and so I believe at the moment that is what we are going to continue to do.

"Just because I've got world championships under my belt, I think you still have to earn the right to be here in terms of how you perform and continuing to deliver".

Six drivers did not take a knee at the ceremony in Austria: Max Verstappen, Charles Leclerc, Kimi Räikkönen, Daniil Kvyat, Carlos Sainz and Antonio Giovinazzi.
