Ireland reports highest daily number of COVID-19 infections since May”

It is the second largest increase in the county since June 1st when a total of 37 new cases were confirmed on the one day.

The National Public Health Emergency Team met today to review Ireland's response and preparedness to Covid-19.

44 cases are located in Kildare, 33 in Dublin, 11 in Clare, 10 in Laois, 8 in Limerick and the remaining 17 are located across 10 counties.

Local news site Kildare Now are reporting that the factory in question is the Irish Dog Foods plant in Naas.

"Today may be a blip associated with a number of specific clusters or it may be a sign of something more significant", Acting Chief Medical Officer Ronan Glynn told a news conference.

The COVID-19 Dashboard provides up-to-date information on the key indicators of COVID-19 in the community.

Clusters are associated with 7,500 confirmed cases across all residential care facilities, of which 5,871 have been in nursing homes.

Washing of hands is the most important measures schools can encourage students to follow, Dr Glynn said ahead of their planned reopening at the end of August.

Paul Reid urged people to "keep fighting hard against this virus".

He appealed to the public to be active in following public health advice over the coming days.

Mr Reid said there are now just six hospitals in the country with one case each.

Though Ireland's case numbers have been slowly dropping over the past few weeks and months, there are growing fears of a second wave of coronavirus, particularly with social distancing laws around the continent being relaxed and worldwide travel well and truly on its way back to normal. The official death toll remains at 556.

The Republic of Ireland began easing its Covid-19 lockdown measures in May by publishing a five-stage roadmap to recovery.

The R number for the coronavirus reproductive rate in Northern Ireland is at between 0.5 and 1, the Department of Health said.

For Covid-19, the World Health Organization says that data to date suggests that 80% of infections are mild or asymptomatic; 15% are severe infection, requiring oxygen and 5% are critical, requiring ventilation.
