J&J Covid-19 vaccine protected monkey in single shot

J&J Covid-19 vaccine protected monkey in single shot”

The vaccine uses a common cold virus, called adenovirus serotype 26 (Ad26), to deliver the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein into host cells, where it stimulates the body to raise immune responses against the coronavirus.

All 20 animals that received the sham vaccine became infected and showed high levels of virus in their lungs and nasal swabs.

Johnson & Johnson on Thursday kicked off US human safety trials for its COVID-19 vaccine after releasing details of a study in monkeys that showed its best-performing vaccine candidate offered strong protection in a single dose.

It says the vaccine prevented infection by providing complete or near-complete protection in the lungs from the virus in non-human primates in the pre-clinical study.

Mike Ryan, executive director at the World Health Organisation, said earlier this months that "there is a long way to go" before the world gets its first approved vaccine. But in a pandemic a single-shot vaccine has a significant advantage, sidestepping a lot of the logistical issues involved in getting people to come back for their second dose.

The trial began at Rana Hospital and Trauma Centre, which is among the 12 institutes selected for clinical trials of the vaccine.

The study saw the monkeys given a panel of vaccine prototypes before being exposed to SARS-CoV-2 infection.

"We are excited to see these pre-clinical data because they show our SARS-CoV-2 vaccine candidate generated a strong antibody response and provided protection with a single dose", said Paul Stoffels, Johnson & Johnson's chief scientific officer.

The adenoviral vector-based vaccine developed by Russian military and government researchers is now in phase 2 trials.

Russian Federation is targeting to be the first in the world to approve a COVID-19 vaccine for mass use in less than two weeks despite safety and efficacy concerns, according to a CNN report.

The company said it is looking to begin the last phase of tests in September and that 1,045 people will participate in the trial.
