German FM Complains About US Threat Of Nord Stream 2 Sanctions NK#141655”

German International Minister Heiko Maas has warned the USA to not intervene with the completion of the Russian-led Nord Stream 2 fuel pipeline challenge, stressing that Europe has the best to decide on its personal power sources.

"I mentioned it in a telephone call with [Secretary of State] Mike Pompeo yesterday and expressed my surprise and displeasure", he said.

Republican senators Ted Cruz, Tom Cotton, and Ron Johnson had sent a threatening letter last week to Fährhafen Sassnitz, the company that operates the port of Mukran on the island of Rügen in the Baltic Sea.

He did not provide further details of the conversation.

Pompeo also warned in July that Washington would punish companies and investors the natural gas pipeline with sanctions under a revision to the US's 2017 CAATSA (Countering America's Adversaries through Sanctions) law.

Maas spoke with US counterpart Mike Pompeo on August 9, expressing his "dismay" over the threat of sanctions against a German port operator for its part in a pipeline project. The pipeline is meant to supply northern Europe with natural gas from Russian Federation.
