Government Confirms Funding for Facilities Upgrades for NHS

Government Confirms Funding for Facilities Upgrades for NHS”

The PM is also expected to reiterate the strict social distancing and hygiene measures in hospitals, and highlight that the public should feel confident to visit A&E for the treatment they need, in an emergency.

Of the 16,000 non-COVID deaths, the ONS suggested 6,000 were as a result of a big reduction in people attending A&E, possibly because of patients' reluctance to seek medical attention. This funding to upgrade A&E across the Trust will ensure that we are in the best possible position for the challenges that the winter months may bring.

The hospitals will be able to use the funding to increase their A&E capacity, with more treatment cubicles and expanded waiting areas to ease overcrowding and improve infection control, Downing Street said on Monday.

Other measures could include increasing same-day emergency care.

The £2.346m for Northern Devon Healthcare NHS Trust (NDHT) is part of the Government's £300m funding for A and E departments in England to upgrade, with work to be completed by the start of 2021.

NHS trusts in England will receive £300 million to upgrade facilities in preparation for seasonal pressures and a potential second coronavirus wave, Boris Johnson has announced.

"These upgrades will help our fantastic NHS prepare for the winter months, helping them to deliver essential services and reduce the risk of coronavirus infections".

North Devon MP Selaine Saxby said staff at the trust had worked tirelessly over recent months and she thanked them for everything they had done to get the community through the coronavirus pandemic. It comes from a £1.5 billion capital building allocation for the health service set out by Mr Johnson in June.

This funding is in addition to last year's announcement that 20 hospitals will receive a share of £850 million to upgrade outdated facilities and equipment.

This will allow the NHS to continue to use the extra hospital capacity acquired from the independent sector, maintain the Nightingale hospitals until the end of March and expand their flu vaccination programme.

To further support A&Es this winter, anyone with a non-emergency care need is urged to contact 111 (online or by phone) or their GP first.

"This funding is part of our record investment in NHS infrastructure to ensure our health services continues to meet the needs of the present and to be fit for future demands placed upon it".
