BC health officials report 90 new coronavirus cases

The latest update from Health Minister Adrian Dix and Dr. Réka Gustafson, the deputy provincial health officer, means total cases in B.C. rise to 4,915 and all but guarantees the province will surpass 5,000 cases over the weekend.

On Thursday, B.C. marked a grim milestone in the fight against COVID-19, as the death toll reached 200. It brings the total number of cases to 160 since the start of the pandemic.

Within Island Health, one new case was confirmed on Friday. Currently, there are 824 active cases in the province, with 13 in hospital, five of who are intensive care.

Public health is monitoring 2,594 people due to identified exposures to known cases.

Hospitalizations in B.C. continued to increase Friday. As of Friday, 3,889 people who previously tested positive for COVID-19 have recovered, leaving the province with 824 active cases, the most it has ever recorded.

There have been no new outbreaks declared in health-care facilities or in the broader community over the last 24 hours, Dix and Gustafson said, but they reminded the public that exposures to the coronavirus continue across B.C.

The most recent facility is the New Vista Care Home in Burnaby, where eight residents and six staff members have tested positive for COVID-19, according to an update released by the facility.
