Coronavirus likely to vanish faster than Spanish flu: World Health Organization chief

In a radio interview on Wednesday, the Australian leader said he is hopeful the vaccine would be made available early next year.

"We hope to finish this pandemic before less than two years", Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus told reporters from the WHO's headquarters in Geneva, insisting that it should be possible to tame the novel coronavirus faster than the deadly 1918 pandemic.

He urged "national unity" and "global solidarity".

Harsh Vardhan said that the game presents a new and extremely creative way to teach people the right tools and behaviours to fight the Covid-19 pandemic.

Dr Michael Ryan, WHO's emergencies chief, noted that the 1918 pandemic had three distinct phases, of which, the second one at the fall of 1918 was the most devastating.

"This virus is not displaying a similar wave-like pattern..."

Today, pandemics can spread more quickly because "we are more connected", which is a disadvantage, according to Adnahom.

"With more connectedness, the virus has a better chance of spreading". "What we want to achieve is as much vaccination as we possibly can, should the vaccine actually prove successful and get through those trials".

"But at the same time we have also the technology to stop it and the knowledge to stop it".

At the end of the conference, the World Health Organization chief stressed the importance of multilateral cooperation, urging countries to work together against the COVID-19 pandemic.

The total number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in South Africa has topped 600,000, while recoveries have topped 500,000.
