Coronavirus vaccine won’t be mandatory, says top US health expert

Coronavirus vaccine won’t be mandatory, says top US health expert”

The top infectious disease doctor in the U.S., Dr. Anthony Fauci, said Monday, August 17 that Covid-19's long-term effects, especially in young people, are "really troublesome", CNN reports.

However, as science finally catches up to the virus that has now infected more than 5 million Americans, fewer Americans say they'll get it once it becomes available.

Some U.S. schools have closed nearly as quickly as they welcomed back students as the nation tries to reopen while the level of new cases per day remains high in many states.

Fauci added that if someone refuses vaccine in the general public, you can not force someone to take it.

"I don't think you'll ever see a mandating of vaccines, particularly for the general public", Fauci said. "To say you have a vaccine and to say you have a vaccine that's proven to be safe and effective..." These were deemed to be safe and effective.

Fauci said that the government already pre-ordered guaranteed purchases. "By the end of the year there should be limited doses", he said.

"The sobering news is that if the vaccine is not safe and effective, you wasted an bad lot of money, to the tune of hundreds of millions of dollars", Fauci, who works at the National Institutes of Health (where one of the leading coronavirus vaccine candidates is now being tried out in tens of thousands of people) said. The priority groups will be decided by two independent advisory groups this year.

Public health officials are developing plans to encourage people to get vaccinated, but Fauci said, people "have the right to refuse a vaccine".

Tedros said that we need to prevent the so-called vaccine nationalism. "No one is safe until everyone is safe", Tedros said.

Despite his grievances with Russia's announcement, Fauci has also recently shown growing "cautious optimism" in the stateside hunt for a vaccine.

While many are waiting for the development of a safe and effective COVID-19 vaccine, health and safety precautions are being laid out globally.

Fauci said that everybody should wear a mask during an interview with actor Matthew McConaughey Thursday night. But there is a mask mandate on individual states such as MS and California, among others.

Fauci added, he'd "be pretty surprised if you mandated it for any element of the general public". He explained he prefers that he wears a mask.

Currently, the USA has a total of 5.5 million confirmed COVID-19 cases, with around 172,000 deaths.
