Toronto confirms first human case of West Nile virus this year

Public health continues to monitor for the virus and weekly mosquito samples are collected throughout Lambton County, officials said. This is the second positive mosquito finding of the season for Perth County, with the first reported last week in Mitchell.

Dr. Eileen de Villa, Toronto's Medical Officer of Health, said in a statement that the likelihood of becoming infected with West Nile "is low in our city".

The health unit has been trapping and testing mosquitoes in locations across Huron and Perth since June 8. Not everyone who is bitten by an infected mosquito will show symptoms of the virus. "That would be a primary way to reduce mosquito populations in the area".

Those who become ill usually experience mild symptoms such as fever, headaches, body aches, rash, nausea, or vomiting.

The Pa. Department of Health said only one in every 150 West Nile Virus cases will develop severe symptoms, such as blindness, disorientation, coma, high fever, muscle weakness, neck stiffness, numbness, paralysis, and tremors.

West Nile is potentially deadly. Repellents that contain DEET are most effective, though sitting with an electric fan outside works well too.
