United Kingdom backs Cambridge plan for vaccine against many coronaviruses”

In order to be able to secure enough doses to rollout the vaccines, the next step for the partnership is for countries to make binding commitments in support of the COVAX Facility, he said.

The University of Cambridge is aiming to start clinical trials of its possible coronavirus vaccine in the autumn after it received 1.9 million pounds ($2.5 million) in funding from the British government, the university said on Wednesday.

Tedros Adhanom Ghebreysus, WHO general-director, said during his opening remarks at a media briefing on COVID-19 that COVAX is a critical mechanism for developing a vaccine as it pools resources and spreads risk out over multiple vaccine candidates while providing all donor countries with access.

Coronavirus Vaccine update: The staff of state-owned enterprises (SOEs), who were preparing to go overseas, and frontline medics were offered two choices of inactivated vaccine candidates developed by Sinopharm for urgent use. Of those involved, 80 potentially self-financing countries have submitted interest in the COVAX facility, with 92 additional low and middle-income countries eligible for support.

The plan for a global rollout of the vaccine, he said, is to ensure those at highest risk around the world, including healthcare workers and seniors, are covered when supplies are low.

China is in a global race to develop cost-effective vaccines to curb the COVID-19 pandemic.

It aims to deliver two billion doses of effective, approved COVID-19 vaccines by the end of 2021.

The COVAX initiative is co-led by the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI), Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance and the WHO.

"Ultimately we aim to make a vaccine that will not only protect from SARS-CoV-2, but also other related coronaviruses that may spill over from animals to humans".

"Highlighting the efforts of governments across the world to mitigate the financial effect of the coronavirus pandemic, Ghebreyesus, however, cautioned more funds was" desperately had to maneuver the portfolio ahead".

A further nine candidates vaccines which complement the current CEPI portfolio are now being evaluated for inclusion in COVAX.

In June, Andy Slavitt, the former Acting Administrator of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services under president Barack Obama, also said the first vaccines would probably have an efficiency similar to those for the flu, saying subsequent vaccines would get progressively more effective. Nine candidate vaccines are now being supported by CEPI; seven of which are now in clinical trials.

"Signing up to the COVAX Facility gives each country its best chance at protecting the most vulnerable members of their populations - which in turn gives the world its best chance at mitigating the toll this pandemic has taken on individuals, communities and the global economy".
