First Black Woman Astronaut Will Join International Space Station Crew”

Separately Tuesday, NASA named astronaut Jeanette Epps to the Starliner's first operational mission. "I have flown in helicopters with Suni traveling and I have flown in the backseat of a T38 with Josh flying and they are each great folks to work with, so I'm on the lookout forward to the mission".

Boeing had conducted an uncrewed flight test of Starliner in December 2019, but after the capsule failed to arrive at the ISS due to a series of software issues, the company and NASA chose to repeat the orbital flight test, now slated to happen later this year.

Epps has authored several journal and conference articles. Before becoming a member of the 2009 astronaut class, Epps worked for the Central Intelligence Agency.

She was congratulated by Boeing astronaut Chris Ferguson, who welcomed her onto the team.

Williams, who will be embarking on her third expedition, and Cassada, on his first, were assigned to the mission in August 2018.

Epps has shared nothing but her excitement on Twitter, writing that she is "looking forward to the mission" and sharing that excitement with her crew members.

The Boeing mission will be headed to the space station as part of NASA's Commercial Crew Program, which works with the aerospace industry on new generations of spacecraft and launch systems.

Considering the fact that getting an astronaut, Epps has aided ISS crews from the ground, together with as guide CAPCOM, communicating in between mission regulate and the astronauts on many missions, Space.com noted.

Both Boeing and Elon Musk's aerospace company SpaceX have been awarded multi-million dollar contracts with NASA, and will share the operation of flights to the ISS and back. He will take part in the first operation mission using SpaceX's Crew Dragon spacecraft, which had its final test earlier this year as part of the Demo-2 launch.

At the time, Epps's brother Henry claimed that racism at NASA was the reason for the switch - a sentiment that Epps has never commented on publicly.

Boeing's first Starliner flight in December was marred by two critical software glitches that curtailed the demonstration to only 48 hours.
