Postal Service: Blame Congress for cuts, not Trump

Postal Service: Blame Congress for cuts, not Trump”

"It's not the post office", Trump said in an interview with The Washington Examiner published late Wednesday.

Joining hundreds of protests across the country, 70 postal workers and union supporters gathered outside the Arcadia Creek United States Post Office in downtown Kalamazoo on August 25. It's like the Russian hoax. They held signs reading "Save the Post Office" while hundreds of drivers passing by during rush hour honked their horns and shouted approval.

The comments are a kind of whiplash turnaround from a months-long attack made by the President to undermine the mail service.

The cost-savings plans that the Postal Service has been implementing are not new.

"The USPS slowdown is nothing more than a voter suppression tactic", James said in a statement, calling Trump's actions a "power grab".

President Trump made sure as the Republican National Convention kicked off on Monday, to reinforce his efforts to delegitimize the voting process and criminalize Democratic efforts to expand mail-in voting amid the coronavirus pandemic. "This Saturday, I will join my colleagues in returning to Congress to vote in favor of emergency funding for the USPS for the health of our democracy and of the American people".

"I have to tell you, that if you go with this universal mail-in. tens of millions of ballots being sent to everybody and their dogs, dogs are getting them, okay?" He's also admitted to holding up USPS funding so that voting-by-mail would be more hard, as reported by The Guardian earlier this month.

The USPS Office of Inspector General said the Postal Service exceeded planned and penalty overtime by almost 14 million hours during the 2019 fiscal year and incurred $521.6 million in "questioned costs" as a result.

In recent days, the President had become increasingly isolated in his unfounded and venomous takedown of the USPS.

The report comes as Postmaster General Louis DeJoy, a Republican donor and ally of President Donald Trump, has come under criticism for his communications with the Trump Campaign.

Facing widespread criticism, DeJoy, a fundraiser for the Republican Party, last week announced he would suspend postal reforms, blamed for delays in delivery, in the months leading up to the election, assuring Congress that allegations the changes were meant to sabotage the election were "outrageous".

Hovland said he wouldn't "speculate as to the reasons" behind Trump's attacks on mail-in voting, "but what I can tell you is that it absolutely doesn't help". But Trump has voiced opposition to the increase in mailed ballots, saying there's an opportunity for fraud.
