Mauritius: 18 dead dolphins wash up on coast after oil spill”

The dolphins have been dying in an area affected by an oil spill caused when the Japanese ship, the MV Wakashio, struck a coral reef last month.

Local media in Mauritius say 18 dolphins have been found dead near the site where a Japanese-owned vessel ran aground and leaked heavy oil.

Approximately 1,000 tons of oil spilled from the MV Wakashio beginning August 6.

Autopsies from another 25 dolphins that washed ashore earlier this week should be released in the coming days, Jasvin Sok Appadu, from the Mauritius fisheries ministry, told Reuters.

The cause of death of 25 dolphins that washed up in Mauritius near the site of an oil spill remains unclear after two of the animals showed no trace of oil in their bodies, a preliminary autopsy report showed on Thursday.

'There was a mother and her baby.He was very exhausted, he didn't swim well.

Greenpeace called in a statement for an "urgent investigation" into the cause of the strandings.

Local authorities carried out autopsies on two of the dead dolphins. "This is an opportunity to speed up to change your business portfolio and make renewable energy the core of your business", Greenpeace said in a follow up letter to the company Thursday, demanding they make good on their promise.

The full impact of the spill is still unfolding, but scientists have warned of a major ecological disaster.

The wildlife at risk includes the critically endangered Pink Pigeon, endemic to the island, seagrasses, clownfish and mangrove forests, whose roots serve as nurseries for fish.

"Inside the reef there is oil spill on the water - if they stay inside maybe all of them will die - but if they go outside maybe they will survive".

The Mauritius Marine Conservation Society said 15 kilometers of coastline have been affected by the spill and it is moving towards the Blue Bay Marine park, home to 38 types of coral and 78 species of fish.

Another damning fact linking the deaths to the oil spill is that the carcasses smelled of fuel, according to oceanographer Vassen Kauppaymuthoo.

The ship's captain and first officer have been charged with "endangering safe navigation".

The ship was travelling on a well-known route when it changed course and ended up hitting the reef.
