SpaceX and NASA to launch first manned flight in nine years

SpaceX and NASA to launch first manned flight in nine years”

Wednesday's launch will stream live on multiple platforms, including NASA's and SpaceX's websites, YouTube and social media channels.

NASA astronauts Bob Behnken and Doug Hurley are trying to become the first men launched into space from USA soil since the Space Shuttle program ended in 2011. SpaceX and Orbital Sciences won the first such round of cargo contracts, and, after a successful program, NASA awarded crew-launch contracts to SpaceX and Boeing.

Musk, who also runs carmaker Tesla, said that the launch will be "the culmination of a dream".

Musk founded SpaceX in 2002 with the goal of drastically cutting the costs of traveling to space, with innovations including reusing as much equipment as possible. They are set to try the launch again on Saturday afternoon, with another backup time on Sunday. Engineers and other experts are watching the weather closely, SpaceX said. SpaceX Vice President of Build and Reliability Hans Koenigsmann described the method of weighing those dozens of sites as an extremely complex algorithm, suggesting that unacceptable weather in certain spots might not fully delay a launch opportunity.

Yes, today is the day when Behnken and Hurley ride the Dragon for what NASA is calling its Demo-2 mission, a test mission to help prove the systems meet NASA's requirements for certification to carry astronauts to the International Space Station (ISS) and back.

Still, adding in the need for SpaceX to attempt to recover Falcon 9 boosters on ocean-based drone ships like Of Course I Still Love You (OCISLY), which carries its own weather restrictions, the company's astronaut launches are going to be extraordinarily sensitive to environmental factors.

The chance of the right weather conditions increased to 60 percent Tuesday, NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine told reporters.
