Pink supermoon seen around the world

It will occur when the moon is within 90% of perigee, which is its closest approach to Earth in orbit. The last time the Moon reached its apogee was on March 24.

2020 is a season of full moon! Supermoon, which will be a little larger than the usual full moon, will be visible from India in the evening of April 8, MP Birla Planetarium Director Debiprasad Duari said.

As the moon was at its closet point to Earth all year, it appeared up to 30% larger than it looks when it's at its furthest point from the planet.

Out of the possible 12 or 13 full moons each year, usually only about three or four fit the classifications of a supermoon. Instead, it will have a golden orange color when it reaches its peak.

While a supermoon is a spectacular sight, the first full moon of spring has been celebrated for thousands of years and is special to many cultures. Historians say that the name goes back to ancient times, and is likely derived from the pink flowers of the Wild Ground Phlox plant which often bloom around this time of year. Aside from the Pink Moon, April's supermoon is also referred to as the Sprouting Grass Moon, Egg Moon and Fish Moon, which are all related to springtime harvesting practices.
