'Potentially hazardous asteroid' to make closest approach to Earth on Sep 1”

Both 2011 ES4 and 2020 QG5 are of the "Apollo" orbit classification, which means they are Earth-crossing asteroids with semi-major axes larger than that of the Earth. It means the asteroid will be closer to Earth than the Moon, which is 3.84 lakh km away from our home planet. The estimated distance of the asteroid is 1.2 lakh km. "2011 ES4's close approach is "close" on an astronomical scale but poses no danger of actually hitting Earth", NASA Asteroid Watch posted Saturday on its Twitter account.

However, experts claim spotting the asteroid will be hard by amateur astronomers as the mammoth asteroid, at such a huge distance, will not be emitting a tail like comets do. It also flew more than 130 times closer than the Moon to the Earth at 230,000 miles. "Specifically, all asteroids with a minimum orbit intersection distance (MOID) of 0.05 au or less and an absolute magnitude (H) of 22.0 or less are considered PHAs", the NASA had said in a statement earlier this year.

A "potentially hazardous asteroid" is presently characterized dependent on parameters that measure the asteroid's capability to make compromising close ways to deal with the Earth, as indicated by NASA.

However, the giant space rock is not a threat to human life, according to scientists at the Center for Near-Earth Object Studies (CNEOS).

The asteroid is expected to hit Earth's orbit on September 6, and will be just one of about ten near-Earth orbit flybys next month.

"The giant outer planets (Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune) formed from an agglomeration of billions of comets and the leftover bits and pieces from this formation process are the comets we see today".

Experts are now tracking around 2,000 asteroids and comets which could threaten our planet. The space rock is also classified as a near-Earth object (NEO). However, we do not expect it to collide and cause any damage.
