Call for 50%-off meal scheme to be extended

Call for 50%-off meal scheme to be extended”

More than 64 million meals have been enjoyed by diners across the country since the launch of the government's Eat Out to Help Out discount scheme.

The Eat Out to Help Out promotion scheme launched by the Government is created to help boost the hospitality industry by providing customers in restaurants, pubs and cafes a 50 percent discount on their meal.

FSB Scotland has called for the scheme to be extended in Aberdeen which has missed out because of the lockdown imposed on the city.

More than 85,000 outlets have taken part and 35 million discounted meals were claimed across the United Kingdom in the first two weeks of the scheme.

It applies to eat-in food and drink on Monday to Wednesdays.

The number of customers at United Kingdom restaurants between Monday to Wednesday last week was 61 percent higher than a year ago, according to restaurant booking website OpenTable.

Rishi Sunak introduced the scheme to help the restaurant industry.

"More than 35 million meals have been cooked and dished out across nearly 50,000 restaurants and cafes who have been able to reap the rewards of this great initiative, but as we enter September with schools reopening and more people going back to their places of work, there are still strong merits to continuing this for one more month".

On their Instagram today Deliveroo said they will be giving £5 off meals every Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday during September.

To encourage more people to opt for delivery to support their local restaurants, Deliveroo is also offering free delivery to new customers for the months of September and October.

CEO and founder of Deliveroo, Will Shu, said:"Deliveroo is passionate about supporting local restaurants, who are central to our business and to so many high streets across the UK".

"Our restaurant partners play a vital role in our economy, just as they do people's everyday lives, bringing people the food they love".

How can you get the Eat in to Help Out discount?

Under the Eat Out to Help Out scheme, customers received a 50% discount on their bill, up to a limit of £10 per person, with the restaurant reclaiming the difference from the government.

Many were not able to open immediately, meaning they couldn't take advantage of the scheme for the full month, and therefore extending the scheme during September would help those businesses really benefit from Eat Out to Help Out.

Around 84,000 restaurants had signed up to the scheme.
