Jeep introduces its first electric-powered hybrid the 2021 Wrangler 4xe

Jeep introduces its first electric-powered hybrid the 2021 Wrangler 4xe”

Jeep is previewing the new Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer with a concept that showcases the potential of the model in its highest form, but the full-size, truck-based SUVs will compete against a range of models from the Chevrolet Tahoe and Ford Expedition to the Cadillac Escalade and Lincoln Navigator.

It will get the equivalent of 50 miles per gallon of gasoline.

While it may only have a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine under the hood that's good for 268 PS and 400 Nm of torque, it gets a helping hand from two electric motors and a 400-volt, 17 kWh lithium-ion battery pack.

On the road the 4xe accelerates to 60mph in just six seconds.

It can also run in a hybrid mode, switching between gasoline and electricity to get the most efficiency.

Drivers of the Wrangler 4xe will have three drive modes to choose from, starting with Hybrid (standard engine-motor combination driving), Electric (forcing all-electric mode, when possible), and eSave (saving battery power for later use).

The price for the plug-in wasn't revealed, but it will surely be a premium over the gas-powered version.

All high-voltage electronics are sealed and waterproof in the Wrangler 4xe, enabling it to match the water fording capabilities of its internal combustion siblings with a rating of 76 cm.

A spokesman for Fiat Chrysler declined to comment.

The automaker, whose late Chief Executive Officer Sergio Marchionne resisted heavy investment in electric vehicles as a loss-making endeavor, is now electrifying its Jeep lineup as global emissions regulations tighten.

This figure actually represents a sales increase of 2.5 per cent year-on-year with the Wrangler being one of the few models in the segment to experience sales growth rather than decline as the Covid-19 pandemic continues to cripple the industry.

As far as drivetrains go, all Jeep will say at this time is that the Grand Wagoneer concept is powered by a plug-in hybrid setup.

The brand is already introducing plug-in Compass and Renegade small SUVs in Europe.

US sales in the large-SUV segment are expected to nearly double in the next four years to more than half a million vehicles, based on data from researcher LMC Automotive.

But the plug-in Wrangler does hold some appeal.

"There are a lot of Jeep owners, people who go off-roading, who also want to preserve the environment where they go off-roading" Abuelsamid said.

Bulging flares dominate the profile, but the Grand Wagoneer otherwise retains a tall and visually narrow shape - not unlike Land Rover's new-generation Discovery.

Despite the obvious parallels in timing, Jeep Australia would neither confirm nor deny the possibility of the Wrangler 4xe heading Down Under with managing director Kevin Flynn reiterating the brand was "monitoring the take up of electrification in Australia" and that it was excited about the "technical developments" being made. The electrification of the Jeep lineup will allow commuters to travel exclusively on electric power, delivering an efficient and fun on-road experience and offering an ability to enjoy even more Jeep capability off-road in almost complete silence, ' he added.
