Brie Larson talks about auditioning for Captain Marvel

However, it has now been revealed that the Academy Award victor was quite hesitant in accepting the role of the trailblazing superhero in the MCU.

On the actor's official YouTube channel, she revealed she had tried out for parts in films way back in the first "phase" of the Marvel Cinematic Universe - in Iron Man 2 and Thor. Split into two parts, the actress went through what a regular audition would be like and films she auditioned for and did not get such as Pitch Perfect, Iron Man 2 and Juno.

When first approached about the character, Larson said she was making "Kong: Skull Island" with Tom Hiddleston and Samuel L. Jackson but didn't tell anyone (not even her mom) about the phone call.

She went on: 'Part of what was fantastic about it and scary about it was that I wasn't allowed to talk to anybody about it. "I don't think I can handle that'".

"I was like, 'I'm too much of an introvert. That's way too big of a thing for me", she recalled of her thinking at the time.

"I was very surprised by the way that they were talking about feminism and the way they were handling it", Larson added. "They had all female writers, a female director, and were going to have as many female voices in it as possible".

She then told her team to turn the role down, but a few months later Marvel came knocking again.

Larson began to consider the role, asking to meet with the writers so she could see what they were doing and whether the story made sense.

'Then I agreed, and I remember laughing a lot, I remember my team being really proud of me because they knew it was a big step for me in embodying myself, believing I could do something so big, in my confidence as a leader, in the belief in storytelling'.

Until now, one of Brie's favourite memories is when she was announced as Captain Marvel onstage at Comic-Con.

Watch Larson reminisce on the full Captain Marvel audition experience ahead! But ultimately, she says she really believed in the story and the messaging of the movie that would empower young women. That moment was when she realised how important this movie would be to fans.
