CBS All Access announced yesterday that Trek's first non-binary and transgender characters would be appearing in Season Three of Star Trek: Discovery.

Star Trek is making diversity history.

Blu del Barrio, a non-binary actor who uses they/them pronouns, has also joined the series as Adira, a highly intelligent character with a confidence and self-assurance well beyond their years. If Alexander's name sounds familiar, it's because they were recently one of the stars of Naughty Dog's The Last of Us Part II. Alexander will play Gray, who is "empathetic, warm, and eager to fulfill his lifelong dream of being a Trill host". However, viewers will watch as his life "takes an unexpected turn".

"Star Trek has always made a mission of giving visibility to underrepresented communities because it believes in showing people that a future without division on the basis of race, gender, gender identity or sexual orientation is entirely within our reach", Discovery co-showrunner and executive producer Michelle Paradise said.

"The third season of Star Trek: Discovery will premiere on Thursday, Oct. 15 on CBS All Access".

The trans character named Gray will be played by trans actor Ian Alexander, the producers said, and non-binary Adira will be played by Blu del Barrio, an actor who like the character does not identify as male or female.

Star Trek: Discovery is heading into a new unknown next season, but the crew of the U.S.S. Discovery won't be alone. This affiliate advertising program also provides a means to earn fees by linking to Amazon.com and affiliated sites.
