New Philips Hue LED strip, color in sync with TV content

New Philips Hue LED strip, color in sync with TV content”

Philips Hue Iris, a lamp meant to illuminate nearby walls, has been updated with richer colors, brighter output, and new finishes. The lights work in tandem with your TV - in fact you mount the new Gradient Light Strip on the back of your television - lighting up depending on what you're watching. A disaster movie where an explosion happens on the left side of the screen? It needs a Hue Bridge and the Philips Hue Play HDMI sync box if you desire to utilize it on your TV, or the Hue Bridge and the Philips Hue Sync app if you desire to utilize it on a computer system screen.

Philips Hue has thought about everything with this new lightstrip.

Signify in the future plans to bring the new gradient lighting technology to additional products in the Philips Hue line, and there's also an upcoming integration with August and Yale smart locks for doing things like turning on the lights right when the lock is activated.

Beyond the screw-in smarts, there's also a snazzy new Hue Iris table lamp being reintroduced, with more colors, lower dimming options, and better brightness (up to 570 lumens) compared to the previous version, and it will run $99. The Hue Ensis pendant light will also soon be available in black, and the "classic" Hue E12 candelabra bulbs in White and Color Ambience and White Ambience have been updated to support Bluetooth at $50 and $25, respectively (for one-packs).

In Europe, people will be able to pick up the Hue Iris in a few extra finishes, including a copper gold, silver and rose. The Hue line already has several light strips, but this new line (called the Philips Hue Play Gradient Light Strip) can display different colors across different segments of the strip, while the old one has a single It was limited to colors.

So, yes, it's a pricey setup but it's by far the simplest way of making the most of the Sync Box which, previously, relied on an array of lights around your TV, as per the demo from our Sync Box review. It can be controlle over Bluetooth or paired with the Hue Bridge for the full set of features and customization. This is made possible by the series of individually addressable LEDs, which let you set different colors for different zones on the strip and blend them together.

These features come at a cost, though. It will be released on October 16th in the United States. The pricing details for the Philips Hue gradient lightstrip are available below. Signify says that this partnership will begin later this month and allow users to set up automatons to automatically turn on lights when a door is unlocked, to grant light access to guests, and more.
