OKC Thunder: Dennis Schroder finishes second for Sixth Man of the Year

OKC Thunder: Dennis Schroder finishes second for Sixth Man of the Year”

He is the first big man since Lamar Odom (2010-11) to win the award.

He earned 58 out of a possible 100 first place votes with Schroder receiving 35 first place votes and Williams earning the other seven.

"He epitomizes what a sixth man of the year award victor is, and trust me, we are getting used to them here with Lou Williams and Jamal Crawford in the past", Rivers said. Harrell and Williams are the first pair of reserves to average 18 points per game each coming off the bench since starters were first listed on the box score in 1970-71 (minimum 25 games off the bench), according to ESPN Stats & Information research.

Harrell was a finalist previous year, finishing third.

The honor is Harrell's first and prevents Williams from winning the award a fourth time. He said his grandmother told him he would get it this year, that he would be acknowledged for how he works in the game she introduced him to and that he fell in love with.

"This could be his award", said Harrell, who wore a T-shirt emblazoned with Williams' face during his trophy ceremony. "I went back to my room and contemplated having my talks one on one with her because we've had these talks and she told me that I was going to win it this year, that this year was going to be my year".

Harrell averaged 18.6 points per game with 7.1 rebounds and 1.7 assists, proving to be a pivotal cog in the Clippers success this season.

Doc Rivers and Lou Williams presented Harrell with the award on Friday morning at the team's film session. Harrell and Williams helped the Clippers have the league's highest-scoring bench for the second straight season. "To have Trez join the group is really awesome".

The award comes with Harrell set to hit unrestricted free agency after the season ends. According to Basketball-Reference and StatMuse's Justin Kubatko, Harrell's impressive 58.0% shooting from the field marks the highest ever by a Sixth Man of the Year victor. "They always have been there and had my back, and you can't do nothing but cherish things like that".
