Steve Nash hiring is "white privilege", says ESPN's Stephen A. Smith | Offside

Charles Barkley put the likes of Stephen A.Smith on blast for calling the Brooklyn Nets hiring Steve Nash as a matter of white privilege.

And although there is a comparison to make with Steve Kerr, who has been wildly successful as the head coach of the Golden State Warriors despite taking the job without head coaching experience himself, Smith noted Tyronn Lue, Mark Jackson, and Sam Cassell as more qualified candidates.

"Ladies and gentlemen, there's no way around this". I called it white privilege yesterday. The move came despite Nash not having head coaching experience on his resume, which Smith pointed to.

Smith also rebutted those who brought up examples like Derek Fisher who was hired as the New York Knicks head coach with no coaching experience.

The Nets hired Nash knowing no other team would be vying for his services, as owner Joe Tsai and general manager Sean Marks worked arduously to convince him to take the clipboard.

Smith's summation of the situation, however, rubbed other commentators in the industry the wrong way - including Charles Barkley.

"I think when you have a responsibility, especially when you got to talk about something serious like race, you can't be full of crap". "You've got to be honest and fair".

Owing to his stature as a two-time MVP and his reputation as one of the great on-court leaders of his generation, Nash should have little trouble connecting with his players in Brooklyn, according to his former boss in Golden State. But I was so disappointed with all these guys.

The NY Knicks legend didn't beat around the bush when we asked him about the Nash hiring. telling us straight up, "We need more Black coaches in the National Basketball Association". He reiterated how tough of a climb it is for many black coaches who remain stuck in assistant coaching positions. Do we need more Black coaches in college football? Yes. Yes, but this wasn't the right time to say it today.
