Washington Football Team releases Adrian Peterson after two seasons with team”

Former Oklahoma running back Adrian Peterson has been released by the Washington Football Team, per a report from NFL Network's Tom Pelissero and Mike Garafolo. Teams have to have 53 players on their main roster ahead of the start of the season, which could lead to other veterans like Peterson getting released from their contracts prior to Week 1.

The move came as a surprise as the 35-year-old had been running with the starters throughout training camp.

Peterson was cut as part of the organization's roster trim down. However, the classic RB was a poor fit in offensive coordinator Scott Turner's heavy motion offense, where running backs are frequently moving pre-snap and serve as pass receiving threats, tools not in Peterson's bag.

"I coached against him a number of years as well when he was in Tampa", Rivera said, "and I've always liked his physicality".

Adrian Peterson had been Washington's leading rusher in both his seasons with the team.

Now, after Guice's release following a domestic violence arrest, he, Peterson and longtime third-down back Chris Thompson are all gone, and the backfield has a decidedly young look.

"We're about to find out what our young players can do more so than anything else", Rivera said. And also what this allows us to do is play these young players. Love missed his rookie season after suffering a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his final college game. Antonio Gibson, J.D. McKissic and Bryce Love were Nos.
