Donny Van De Beek Was Wanted By Six Clubs”

Donny van de Beek acknowledged on Thursday that he reached an agreement with Real Madrid to sign for the Spanish club last summer and that he was disappointed when the opportunity got squandered.

And closer to home, Van de Beek had a couple of Ajax legends to turn to for their opinion on the Red Devils. "They just spent £40 million ($53 million) on a position where they are already strong", he continued.

"I guess it was because the club [Real] couldn't sell the players they had planned to", Van de Beek told De Telegraaf.

The 23-year-old put pen to paper on a five-year deal with Manchester United after the 20-time English champions saw off competition from FC Barcelona and Manchester United.

And the midfielder revealed that Bergkamp - father of his partner Estelle and one of Arsenal's greatest ever players - has spoken to him about moving to English football.

Murphy would've liked United to have signed a more defensive-minded player, but calls Van De Beek "very good".

The Dutch midfielder is viewed as a flawless attacking partner for United's top prospect, Jadon Sancho.

Van de Beek has also been capped ten times by the Dutch national team over the past three years, but has failed to find the net.

"You have to have someone who can play the holding role". That signing looked to me like: 'Oh we haven't bought anyone yet, let's go and buy someone, who can we get?' When you look at their midfield, Fred was improving, and they've got Scott McTominay. It's like them going for Jadon Sancho. 'It makes no sense to me. "Now they won't get a game", Merson added. If they sign Sancho, Mason Greenwood doesn't play.

United face a delayed start to their Premier League season because of their Europa League exploits, but will face Crystal Palace in their first game back.
