Extinction Rebellion blockade of United Kingdom newspaper printing plants 'completely unacceptable': Johnson

Extinction Rebellion blockade of United Kingdom newspaper printing plants 'completely unacceptable': Johnson”

Under a banner reading "Free the truth", XR tweeted that it was using the disruption to expose the newspapers' "failure to report on the climate & ecological emergency, and their consistent manipulation of truth to suit their own agendas".

Readers of the Sun and the Times were told on Twitter that the protest action could mean delayed deliveries of papers to newsagents on the morning of Saturday 5 September.

Labour former shadow home secretary Diane Abbott said direct action is a "legal tactic" and added it would be "ridiculous" for the Government to reclassify Extinction Rebellion.

The Murdoch-owned Newsprinters works also print the Daily Mail, the Daily Telegraph and the Financial Times.

The blockade prompted an immediate backlash from across the British political establishment.

"It is completely unacceptable to seek to limit the public's access to news in this way", Johnson underscored.

She was echoed by UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson who described a free press in a tweet as something that is "vital in holding the government and other powerful institutions to account on issues critical for the future of our country, including the fight against climate change".

Ian Murray, executive director of the Society of Editors, said: "Everyone has the right to peacefully protest and make their voices heard, after all that is what a free press is all about".

"Not to mention all those small businesses that rely on being able to sell newspapers".

The demonstration led leading to major delays in deliveries of several national newspapers.

Newsprinters condemned the protests as an "attack on all of the free press" which had affected workers going about their jobs, and others such as newsagents who face a "financial penalty".

"Newspapers are already struggling - get out there & buy a paper to support the free press", he said. "They're upset", he told AFP. I will be requesting details of the attendees at previous meetings since I am aware that one of Extinction Rebellion's organisers, Roger Hallam, is based in Wales and is on the record as calling for business people and governments to have 'a bullet in the head.' Hallam did not meet Paul Davies MS.

The group, which formed in Britain in 2018 before becoming a global protest movement, kicked off 10 days of renewed demonstrations across the country on Tuesday.

Further protests were planned Saturday.

The remarks come after more than 100 XR protesters on Friday blocked roads outside three printworks in England and Scotland, used by The Times, The Sun, The Telegraph, and the Daily Mail, all conservative-leaning titles with a combined daily circulation of about 3 million copies.

Under additional proposals, Parliament, courts and the press could be given special status in regard to the key role they play in democracy, with the potential for police to be handed beefed-up powers to stop demonstrators entering designated areas outside such premises.
