Mackenzie Scott, Jeff Bezos' ex-wife, becomes world's richest woman”

Jeff Bezos' ex-wife, MacKenzie Scott is now the world's richest woman after Amazon shares surged during coronavirus lockdown. The take off in shares expanded the wealth of Bezos to over $200 billion.

She is now No. 12 on the list with an estimated net worth of $64.8 billion.

Scott, who owns a 4 percent stake in the ecommerce giant, has added another $30.3 billion to her bank balance in the past year, taking her net worth to a staggering $67.4 billion, according to Bloomberg Billionaires Index.

Scott's freshly discovered spot at the high spot comes after her mammoth separation settlement from Amazon author Bezos last July. She said most of the initial pledges went to causes promoting racial equity, LGBTQ+ equity, gender equity, public health, and climate change.

Business Insider previously reported that, by the end of the same week, Scott had recovered that money after the value of her Amazon stake had grown. In a post on her Medium account, she wrote, "there's no question in my mind that anyone's personal wealth is the product of a collective effort, and of social structures which present opportunities to some people, and obstacles to countless others".

As part of "The Giving Pledge" - a commitment among some of the nation's richest to donate the majority of their wealth - Scott has given $1.7 billion away to nonprofit organizations. Launched in 2019, the initiative is still actively trying to spread.

Scott's position wasn't the only one to shift on the index, which is a daily ranking of the world's richest people.

Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates, the world's second-richest tech billionaire, saw a decline of $2.9 billion in his net worth.
