Nations League: Raheem Sterling scores as England beat Iceland 1-0”

Raheem Sterling praised England for finding "something deep within" as his penalty snatched a late 1-0 Nations League win over Iceland.

Harry Kane had an early goal wrongly ruled out for offside before Kyle Walker was sent-off for two bookable offences 20 minutes from time.

In an chaotic end to a largely boring encounter, Sterling looked to have secured three points for manager Gareth Southgate's side when he rolled in an 89th-minute spot-kick after his shot was handled by Sverrir Ingason, who was then sent off after receiving a second yellow card.

Yet England nearly had to settle for a draw a moment later when Joe Gomez was cited for a foul at the opposite end on Holmbert Fridjonsson from the restart.

The Manchester City man was the hero in a frantic final five minutes in Reykjavik after a game marked by a relative pre-season rustiness sparked to life with penalties at either end of the pitch.

Birkir Bjarnason ballooned the spot-kick over the bar when Jordan Pickford guessed the wrong way and Ward-Prowse may well have contributed to the horrendous effort.

"It was tough but we got through it", the 25-year-old told City's website.

"It was definitely unusual but I'd rather play matches than training". "We said if there's any setbacks in the game - we didn't expect the red card - we kept playing our football".

"We shouldn't have conceded that sloppy penalty, but we got lucky at the end". "We have a bright future ahead and we need to keep growing as a team".

"It was a very odd game, really", Southgate said.

As quoted by City's portal, Foden said: "It feels wonderful, a dream come true".

Southgate said his side had shown "terrific character" before then but added: "We then give a really poor penalty away and it feels like we got out of jail". "It sums the week up, there's been hard challenges, we leave here with the win but a bit flat because in the end it feels like we got away with it". "The disallowed offside goal should stand I think and that would have had a big bearing", added Southgate.

"We get the penalty and Raheem's drive and desire was outstanding and then there's another lesson we have to learn", said Southgate.

"I want to keep playing for my country, not just [to be] a one off and, hopefully, I can keep the shirt". He was making his 49th global appearance and has only just regained his place in the squad, with England awash with top-quality right backs.
