Nigeria receives world's 1st COVID-19 vaccine from Russian Federation

Russia's candidate vaccine against Covid-19 is safe and generates an immune response, Russian researchers said on Friday in their first scientific paper on the vaccine that they want mass produced in India and some other countries.

The Minister of Health, Dr. Osagie Ehanire stated that Nigeria has been participating in series of knowledge exchange and contacts with different research bodies and countries to find solutions to the COVID-19 challenge and has contacted the Embassy of the Russian Federation in Nigeria for right of access immediately the Russian COVID-19 Vaccine was announced.

"Large, long-term trials including a placebo comparison and further monitoring are needed to establish the long-term safety and effectiveness of the vaccine for preventing COVID-19 infection".

Named "Sputnik-V", The Lancet medical journal reported that after two trials involving 76 participants, 100% of participants developed antibodies to the new coronavirus without any severe side effects.

It is based on a platform that was previously used to create other vaccines.

Russian Ambassador to Nigeria, Alexey Shebarshin, presented the vaccine to Nigeria's Minister of Health, Osagie Ehanire, on Friday, September 4, 2020.

"All of the boxes are checked. Now we will start asking questions of some of the Western vaccines".

Brendan Wren, Professor of Microbial Pathogenesis at London's School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine said: "The report is a case of "so far, so good".

The vaccine's results have been compared with convalescent plasma to understand the immunogenic impact of the vaccine against naturally developed immunity, and it was found that the vaccine induced a stronger immune response.

The vaccine was administered in two forms - frozen and freeze-dried - and the frozen form showed greater efficacy in terms of production of neutralising antibodies and T-cells.

Tedros welcomed several candidate vaccines for Covid-19 having moved to advanced stages of testing, and voiced hope that one would soon become available "so that the world can get back to normal".

Over half a dozen drugmakers are already conducting advanced clinical trials, each with tens of thousands of participants.

Several, including Britain's AstraZeneca and U.S. companies Moderna and Pfizer expect to know if their COVID-19 vaccines work and are safe by the end of 2020.
