Texans, Deshaun Watson Reach Four-Year, $160M Extension

Texans, Deshaun Watson Reach Four-Year, $160M Extension”

Watson is getting a four-year extension that pays him big bucks.

Watson, who had two years remaining on his rookie deal, is now under contract through the 2025 season, and his annual salary trails only Patrick Mahomes.

His new contract also puts him near the top of the National Football League in terms of average base salary for the next several years, surpassing Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson for second place.

Following the announcement, Watson took to Twitter with a message for all of the fans and the people that made this possible.

Turns out, that was only the teaser. At the same time, it proves that Watson is committed to being the franchise quarterback of the Texans.

Aside from Mahomes' insane extension, Watson will have the largest contract in the NFL.

In 2018, he started all 16 games and guided Houston to an 11-5 record and an AFC South title. He has completed 66.8 percent of his passes for 9,716 yards with 71 touchdowns and 29 interceptions.

Watson also rushed for 551 yards and 5 TDs, and at season's end, he was named to his first Pro Bowl. In three seasons, he has appeared in 38 games (37 starts) and been selected to two Pro Bowls.

The Texans can now check off the final item on their offseason to-do list: tying quarterback Deshaun Watson to Houston for the next half decade.

The 24-year-old threw for 3,852 yards and 26 touchdowns last season when he led the Texans to the divisional round of the playoffs.

Watson's four-year extension bests the four-year extensions recently signed by Russell Wilson ($140 million), Aaron Rodgers and Jared Goff (both $134 million, but with different guarantees).
