Australia's CSL agrees to manufacture two Covid-19 vaccine candidates”

Scott Morrison touring the Astra Zeneca facility in NSW where a vaccine for COVID-19 is being produced.

The trials were expected to begin from September first week but have been delayed as safety approval is still pending from the Data Safety and Monitoring Board (DSMB) for the first 100 candidates selected to undergo the trials, the institute told IANS.

The next step for the vaccine is that it will now enter a 40,000 strong later-stage trial.

The vaccine was administered in two forms - frozen and freeze-dried - and the frozen form showed greater efficacy in terms of production of neutralising antibodies and T-cells.

Everyone will require two doses, the initial and a booster, meaning Australia should have 30 million doses leftover which will be sent to neighbouring island nations to help immunise 15 million residents.

The leader of the team behind Sputnik V said on Friday that the immune response documented among volunteers taking the world's first registered coronavirus vaccine is sufficient to fight any level of Covid-19 infection.

The vaccine was approved by the Russian government on August 11. "Now we will start asking questions of some of the Western vaccines".

AstraZeneca's candidate is seen as a frontrunner in a global race to deliver an effective coronavirus vaccine.

Brendan Wren, Professor of Microbial Pathogenesis at London's School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine said: "The report is a case of "so far, so good". Health authorities plan to begin mass vaccinations in November.

"We expect the majority in Brazil because it's the biggest country and also the one most affected by the pandemic so we expect a lot of people volunteering, but we expect also high numbers in Colombia and in Argentina", Bacaltchuk said.

J&J's vaccine is one of over a hundred worldwide being developed in response to the coronavirus pandemic, which has infected almost 26.5 million people and led to some 869,323 deaths.

AstraZeneca, Pfizer and Moderna are among those in the lead.
