Coronavirus: Portugal quarantine rule now in force for parts of UK

Coronavirus: Portugal quarantine rule now in force for parts of UK”

But there were questions over whether the Westminster Government was heeding the advice of the Joint Biosecurity Centre (JBC), which advises on the threat faced by travel from foreign nations.

Portugal had only been removed from the United Kingdom quarantine list two weeks ago but coronavirus cases have now risen back above 20 cases per 100,000 people - the threshold used for past travel decisions.

On Portugal, he said the decision had failed to take into account the increased level of testing.

The prime minister's spokesperson said that the government had been consistent thus far in only updating the quarantine list on a weekly basis - hinting that travellers would not be required to quarantine for at least another week.

Acknowledging that disparities in the UK's quarantine policies are causing bafflement among holidaymakers, Grant Shapps stressed there was little he could do.

Scotland and Wales are imposing 14 days of isolation on arrivals from Portugal.

But UK government Transport Secretary Grant Shapps said: "We continue to keep the Travel Corridor list under constant review and won't hesitate to remove countries if needed".

A Scottish government spokesman hit back saying there had been a "worrying number of people in Scotland who tested positive for COVID-19 and who had returned from Greece".

People returning from Portugal to Scotland and Wales face a 14-day quarantine from today, but not those returning to England and Northern Ireland.

"This indicated a significant rise in both the prevalence of the virus in Portugal and in test positivity".

"With Scotland's relatively low infection rate, importation of new cases is a significant risk to public health".

A No 10 spokesman said: "Ministers assess the data which is provided by JBC and the JBC risk assessments are assessed by ministers".

Justice Secretary Humza Yousaf said the decision to add Portugal came after coronavirus cases there rose above 20 per 100,000 of the population.

"That's why the quarantine system that we have has got to be an important part of our repertoire, of our toolbox, in fighting Covid".

The latest quarantine rules in Wales apply to travelers from Portugal, six Greek islands and French Polynesia.
