Djokovic disqualified from US Open after hitting lineswoman with ball”

Top seed Djokovic was 26-0 in 2020 before the fourth-round clash, and his departure from Flushing Meadows means the US Open will crown a first-time men's Grand Slam victor for the first time since 2014 - the year that Marin Cilic lifted the singles trophy.

Top-seeded Novak Djokovic has been defaulted from his fourth-round match at the US Open after he accidentally hit a line judge with a tennis ball.

Djokovic had just lost a game to his opponent, Pablo Carreno Busta, to fall behind 6-5 in the first set.

He hit a ball behind him in annoyance that hit a female line judge.

Serbian star Djokovic takes on Spain's 20th seed Pablo Carreno Busta in the last 16 at Flushing Meadows as he aims to edge closer to an 18th Grand Slam title.

He struck a ball away in frustration - and although he was not facing the assailed lineswoman, the ball hit her and she was bent double, coughing and needed medical attention.

Following around ten minutes of discussions with the tournament referee and a couple of other officials, the umpire declared that Carreno Busta had won by default. Djokovic got lucky a few years ago at the 2016 French Open.

Speaking of major championships, the other big result of this shocking story is that with Novak Djokovic out of the US Open, and Rafael Nadal (COVID-19 safety reasons) and Roger Federer (injury) unable to play in the tournament, there will be a first-time men's major champion at this event.
