Novak Djokovic defaulted from US Open for hitting lineswoman with ball

Novak Djokovic defaulted from US Open for hitting lineswoman with ball”

Novak Djokovic, the No. 1 tennis player in the world and heavy favorite to win the U.S. Open, was disqualified from the NY tournament on Sunday after he inadvertently struck a line judge with a tennis ball in an act of frustration.

After several minutes of debate with on-court officials, Djokovic was defaulted from the match.

Djokovic's disqualification occurred following an incident near the end of the first set in his last-16 match with Spain's Pablo Carreno Busta.

Djokovic then needed an injury time out - down 30-0 in the 11th game, which he lost, to give Busta a 6-5 lead. The ball ended up hitting a lineswoman, who was standing behind him, in the throat.

Djokovic rushed over to check that she was okay and after a few minutes she got up and walked off the court.

Via Ben Rothenberg at The New York Times, Djokovic also noted that the line judge was able to get up and didn't need to be taken to the hospital.

After saving the first break point, Djokovic's serve was broken.

Carreno Busta now reaches the US Open quarterfinals where he awaits the victor of Shapovalov and David Goffin.

The USTA's wording makes clear that Djokovic's intent did not factor into the decision, just the fact that his actions were "dangerous or reckless" and were made "with negligent disregard for the consequences".

"This whole situation has left me really sad and empty", said Djokovic. Djokovic has won 17 Grand Slam singles titles and was expected to win his 18th in a field that was minus Roger Federer, who is recovering from knee surgery, and Rafael Nadal, who elected not to compete because of concerns related to traveling during the coronavirus outbreak. I'm extremely sorry to have caused her such stress.

"I think it was bad luck", he said.

The US Open will continue without Djokovic for the next week.

Federer holds the record with 20, while Nadal holds 19.

"I checked on the lines person and the tournament told me that thank God she is feeling OK".

For the first time since 2014, the men's singles side of the tournament is now guaranteed to have a new victor.

He reached the quarter-finals with an impressive 6-2 6-2 6-1 win over Alejandro Davidovich Fokina and the German star was excited by the opportunity that had now opened up. No Grand Slam champions left in the draw.
