Phase 2 clinical trials for Covaxin to begin on Monday

Australia will receive the first doses of an AstraZeneca and Oxford University COVID-19 vaccine in January 2021 if trials prove successful, after Canberra agreed a deal to purchase a second potential vaccine, Prime Minister Scott Morrison will say on Monday.

Production of the vaccine to support late-stage clinical trials is underway at CSL's biotech manufacturing facilities in Broadmeadows, a suburb of Melbourne.

Health Minister Greg Hunt said Australians would be among the first in the world to receive a COVID-19 vaccine, once it is available.

Morrison, who has previously expressed optimism that a vaccine could be available early 2021, in August said that a vaccine would be made "as mandatory as you can possibly make it" but later walked back from that suggestion.

Everyone will require two doses, the initial and a booster, meaning Australia should have 30 million doses leftover which will be sent to neighbouring island nations to help immunise 15 million residents.

Under the deal with UQ and CSL, Australia will buy 51 million doses of that tie-up's vaccine.

"The vaccine is highly immunogenic and induces strong humoral and cellular immune responses in 100% of healthy adult volunteers, with antibody titres in vaccinated participants higher than those in convalescent plasma", the authors of the study said.

Almost all of the US' adversaries intensified their attempts to steal American research while Washington, in turn, has moved to protect the universities and corporations doing the most advanced work.

The Australian Government is contributing significantly to vaccine development work both in Australia and around the world, investing $362 million in vaccines, therapeutics and COVID medicines - including $257 million in vaccines. This global organization said that according to our criteria, no vaccine reached the advanced stage of clinical trials is even 50% effective against the corona virus.

Esther Orozco, co-ordinator of the scientific group that represents Mexico at the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations, said research based on a virus that transmits the avian Newcastle disease is the most viable candidate to produce the first vaccine in Mexico.

The agreement came as Australia's Victoria state said 41 cases of COVID-19 have been detected in the past 24 hours, down on the 63 cases reported one day earlier and the lowest one-day rise since June 26.
