UK's Brexit negotiator: London is prepared for no-deal exit”

The British leader's warning comes ahead of a crucial round of post-Brexit negotiations which are to resume in London on Tuesday.

In another sign of potential trouble ahead, the Financial Times reported that Johnson's government was planning domestic legislation that would water down commitments to maintaining an open border between the U.K.'s Northern Ireland and European Union member Ireland that it has already signed up to.

"We're ready for any eventuality, of course ..."

Britain ended its European Union membership on January 31 but is still following European Union rules during the transition period until December 31 to enable a permanent future trade deal to be reached.

He will say there needs to be an agreement by the European Council on 15 October if it is to be in force by the end of the year, so "there is no sense in thinking about timelines that go beyond that point".

"If we can't agree by then, then I do not see that there will be a free trade agreement between us, and we should both accept that and move on", he said in the comments, which were released in advance by his office.

I want to be absolutely clear that, as we have said right from the start, that would be a good outcome for the UK.

"A lot of what we are trying to do this year is to get them to realise that we mean what we say and they should take our position seriously", he added.

Likelihood of UK's departure from the bloc without a lucid trade deal has been mounting sharply over the recent past as Britain's insistence on full autonomy over its state aid plans had been threatening the feasibility of a UK-EU trade deal by an end-2020 deadline, negotiators from both sides alongside diplomats had unveiled late on Friday.

The EU-UK future relationship negotiations have been deadlocked for months over fisheries, the issue of state aid and the so-called level playing field, police and judicial cooperation, and how both sides would resolve disputes in the future. "If we can reach an agreement that regulates trade like Canada's, great".

The Minister for Foreign Affairs Simon Coveney has described reports that the United Kingdom will attempt to override elements of the Northern Ireland Protocol through upcoming legislation as "a very unwise way to proceed".

Michel Barnier, the bloc's top negotiator, said last week he was "worried" and "disappointed" by the current state of talks, and that Britain would need to shift its position to reach an agreement.

The EU said a deal had to be struck before November to allow time for parliamentary approval and legal vetting before the transition period expired. But Johnson, whose government had said it wanted a "zero tariff, zero quota" regime, insisted it would still be a "good outcome" for Britain.

The EU, in turn, accuses Britain of failing to negotiate seriously.

"We've actually got the issues boiled down to two outstanding bones of contention", he said.
