Province launches interactive map to show school outbreaks of COVID-19

Province launches interactive map to show school outbreaks of COVID-19”

At least 20 Alberta schools have reported cases of COVID-19 since students across the province started returning to classrooms a week ago.

Dr. Deena Hinshaw has explained that's because there's no evidence the cases were contracted at school.

"Any individual considered exposed to this case will be contacted directly by Alberta Health Services, per standard contact tracing procedures", said AHS.

AHS said infection prevention control measures - physical distancing, masking, hand hygiene and environmental cleaning - have been reviewed with the schools.

Gilmore says AHS has made it clear that in order to be called an outbreak on the new outbreak mapping system, it had to be spread inside the schools.

The statement said Chinook High School will remain open, based on advice from AHS.

Hoffman said the United Conservative government needs to take the number of cases in schools seriously.

She says "The map will list every school where there have been two or more cases in a school setting within a 14 day period where disease could have been acquired or transmitted in the school".

Even though the outbreak has been communicated to the School Division and parents, nothing is showing on the province's new interactive school map.

Hinshaw said there are times when a school sends out an alert about a case before the public health investigation concludes that a person with COVID-19 was not infectious at school, which can lead to a discrepancy in the numbers.

However, the map had not been updated to include the Calgary or Lethbridge outbreaks.

Angela School and Lester B. Pearson High School, and Bowness High School in Calgary have recorded COVID-19 cases since schools reopened.

In other parts of Alberta, Raymond High School in Raymond and Lawrence Grassi Middle School in Canmore are also dealing with individual cases.

"Again, these two cases in the same school were not transferred within the school context".
