Bill to override parts of Brexit deal clears first hurdle

Bill to override parts of Brexit deal clears first hurdle”

The British government said explicitly last week that it plans to break worldwide law by breaching parts of the Withdrawal Agreement treaty that it signed in January, when it formally left the EU.

"We cannot have a situation where the very boundaries of our country could be dictated by a foreign power or global organisation", he said.

Johnson's plan to explicitly break global law has plunged Brexit back into crisis less than four months before Britain is finally due to leave the EU's orbit at the end of a transition period, and put trade talks with the bloc in peril.

"Lawmakers should not be lawbreakers" - A Tory former Cabinet minister has said it would be "unacceptable" to breach global law with legislation to override the Brexit divorce deal.

As part of the Brexit divorce deal, Britain and the European Union agreed to keep Northern Ireland - the only part of the U.K.to share a border with the bloc - bound to some European Union rules on trade, to avoid the need for border checks on goods moving between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland.

The bill is created to enable goods and services to flow freely across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland when the United Kingdom leaves the EU's single market and customs union on 1 January.

Later in the parliamentary debate, Miliband said of the bill: "What the Prime Minister is coming to this House to tell us today is that his flagship achievement, the deal he told us was a triumph, the deal he said was "oven-ready", the deal on which he fought and won the general election is now contradictory and ambiguous".

In Brussels, EU officials rejected the UK PM's claims that the move was needed because the bloc had refused to take a "revolver off the table" in ongoing trade talks.

However, although the Johnson government wants to fast-track the law so that it can be on the statute in the event that an EU-UK trade pact is not finalised before the end of 2020, it is likely to face difficulties in the House of Lords, where Conservative lawmakers are in a minority.

"Mr Mitchell said he backed large parts of the Bill, but would not back it unless it was amended, but ". deliberately voting to breach worldwide law is something which I can not do.

The EU has demanded Britain scrap the main parts of the bill by the end of September and that if not, there will be no trade deal at the end of the year to cover everything from auto parts to food.

MPs initially backed the Internal Market Bill in last night's vote by 340 votes to 263.

Mr Johnson said some on the EU side even wanted to designate all goods moving from Britain to Northern Ireland as being "at risk" of entering the EU single market, making them liable to EU tariffs.

But opposition Labour spokesman Ed Miliband ridiculed the idea.

"Either he wasn't straight with the country about the deal in the first place or he didn't understand it".

Conservative lawmaker Rehman Chishti, a former lawyer, quit as Johnson's special envoy on freedom of religion or belief over the bill.

Even some Brexit-backing Tories are unhappy, with one, Charles Walker, saying: "I'm no fan of the European Union. but surely we have to exhaust all other options before we press the nuclear button".
