'I don't think science knows': Donald Trump questions climate change”

Mr Trump, who flew into Sacramento in central California on the third day of a reelection campaign swing, pushed back against state leaders who said that climate change underlies the ever-stronger blazes.

Woodward had 18 interviews with Trump for the book.

Weather conditions are not expected to improve any time soon as high winds of up to 40 miles per hour are forecast in the coming days in parts of California.

Nearly 195,000 people in the US have died of the coronavirus, far more than in any other country.

Search and rescue teams, with dogs in tow, were deployed across the blackened ruins of southern OR towns on Sunday as smoldering wildfires continue to ravage the US west and officials warn of mass casualties.

Newsom reportedly told Trump, "we've known each other too long and the working relationship I value".

Earlier, Democratic challenger Joe Biden branded Mr Trump a "climate arsonist" whose policies are contributing to evermore powerful natural disasters.

The wildfires sweeping the West Coast of the United States took centre stage in the U.S. election campaign on Monday, with President Donald Trump visiting California and blaming the blazes on poor forest management while his Democratic challenger Joe Biden stressed the role of climate change.

Trump and Newsom are participating in a briefing Monday on the deadly fires that have forced thousands of residents out of their homes along the West Coast.

Trump also continued to downplay the role of climate change in the West's horrific wildfire season.

In an exchange with California's Secretary for National Resource during a briefing on the wildfires across the state, Mr Trump hit back at climate change arguments.

The official responded: "I wish science agreed with you".

Trump visited the area to cheer on first responders and emergency managers, holding a ceremony to honor California National Guard troops who rescued trapped campers.

While he has often criticized Newsom by name and assailed what he contends is California's poor forest management, most of the state's forests are managed by the federal government.

When addressing reporters after exiting Air Force One, Trump was asked if climate change was also part of the problem, in combination with forest management.

"It was worse than the Camp Fire, which I didn't think was possible".

After sharing the video of the exchange online, Jamie Henn, co-founder of 350.org who now runs Fossil Free Media, said: "I thought I'd find it amusing watching this, but instead it's just chilling: as the West Coast faces a climate catastrophe, the president laughs at them and denies the problem exists". According to Doug Grafe, Chief of Fire Protection at the Oregon Department of Forestry, some good progress is being made in that regard. On Saturday in Nevada, per CNN, Trump once again used his repetitive rhetorical prowess to deny the issue of climate change and say, "I spoke to the folks in Oregon, Washington they're really - they've never had anything like this".

Speaking in Wilmington, Delaware, on Monday, Biden said Trump's "climate denial may not have caused these fires and hurricanes".

In his speech, the Democratic presidential nominee sought to emphasize that the effects of climate change have wide-reaching consequences.

Biden, who gave his climate speech in DE on Monday, released a $2 trillion plan in July to boost investment in clean energy and stop all climate-damaging emissions from US power plants by 2035.

Meanwhile, Biden is remaining in his home state of DE, as he has for much of the campaign, to avoid large crowds and prevent the spread of the coronavirus. Wildfires don't skip towns that voted a certain way.

Dale Kasler covers climate change, the environment, economics and the convoluted world of California water. "It's not a partisan phenomenon; it's science", he said. She wore boots with "VOTE" stenciled on each one. Wildfires are burning the suburbs in the West. Floods are wiping out suburban neighborhoods in the Midwest.

Monday evening, the former vice president will address via internet the Poor People's Campaign virtual event "Voting is Power Unleashed".
