With the new 0.7μm ISOCELL technology, the South Korean giant aims to expand the ultra-high-resolution offerings to mainstream smartphones. The 108MP ISOCELL HM2 brings "Super PD" which is a faster way of using phase-detection for autofocussing.

Samsung Electronics on Tuesday launched four mobile image sensors with 0.7µm (micrometre) sized pixels which is industrys smallest pixel size for smartphones of the future. The Korean company says the new tech should improve light sensitivity by up to 12% compared to the Isocell Plus tech now used on its sensors.

Samsung confirmed that more 0.7 micron pixel sensors are coming later this year though, and that they'll offer brand-new Isocell 2.0 technology.

To collect an ample amount of light and increase the full well capacity despite the minute pixel sizes, Samsung has incorporated its advanced ISOCELL Plus and Smart-ISO technologies, especially optimized for 0.7μm.

The third-generation Samsung 108MP ISOCELL HM2 sensor, 64MP ISOCELL GW3 sensor, 48MP ISOCELL GM5 module and 32MP ISOCELL JD1 sensor were announced.

108MP ISOCELL HM2: It is a successor to the ISOCELL HMX and the ISOCELL HM1.

Claimed to be the industry's smallest 32MP camera sensor measuring in at 1/3.14-inches, it also supports the new staggered-HDR feature.

The second camera sensor revealed today is the 64MP Isocell GW3, following on from the 64MP GW1 and GW2. Thanks to the smaller pixel size, the GW3's optical size is almost identical to that of Samsung's 0.8μm 48Mp image sensor. GW3 is specialized in capturing moving images, combining resolution, brightness and gyroscope-based image stabilization technologies, such as Tetracell and Smart-ISO. Samsung is positioning this sensor as being ideal for pop-up selfie cameras as well as under-display selfie cameras.

The GM5 is designed for use in telescoping or ultra-wide angle cameras, according to Samsung. The small pixel size will allow cameras to be more powerful with thin smartphone designs. The height of the sensor is comparable to that of the 0.9μm 20MP or 1.0μm 16MP sensors, which makes it a great fit on the front of a device. It adds that the GW3's "optical size" is nearly identical to its 48MP 0.8 micron pixel sensors.

Out of the four new sensors, the ISOCELL HM2, GW3, and JD1 are already in mass production and we expect to see these new sensors in upcoming smartphones sometime later this year or early next year. The sensor also offers a staggered-HDR feature, a faster and more power-efficient HDR technology that expedites image processing by sending a readout of long, medium, and short exposures of each row of pixels respectively to the mobile processor.
