Scheffler out of US Open with a positive coronavirus test”

Sam Horsfield became the second player to withdraw from the U.S. Open due to a positive COVID-19 test and will miss the major championship this week at Winged Foot.

Sam Horsfield announced on Monday that he had tested positive for the coronavirus upon arrival at Winged Foot Golf Club in NY.

Horsfield said he was asymptomatic and feeling well, but based on CDC guidelines he will notify those with whom he has had close contact and self-isolate until he returns a negative test.

Scheffler's history with the USGA dates to his victory in the 2013 U.S. Junior Amateur.

Horsfield has won twice on the European tour already this season, both at the Hero Open and the Celtic Classic.

Slovakia's Rory Sabbatini and South Africa's Branden Grace have replaced the pair, with the field of 144 being the smallest at a US Open since 1932. He played the U.S. Open at Chambers Bay in 2015 and at Oakmont in 2016 through U.S. qualifiers as an amateur, and he played a year ago at Pebble Beach by qualifying through the sectional qualifier in England.

Koepka and Northern Ireland's Graeme McDowell previously pulled out of the Travelers Championship after their caddies tested positive for coronavirus.

The 24-year-old Horsfield had returned a negative test last Thursday, but tested positive after arriving in NY, forcing him out of the second major of the year which will take place from September 17-20.

This year's tournament starts on Thursday at Winged Foot in Mamaroneck in NY.

The Player of Year is voted on by PGA Tour members who played in at least 10 events during the 2019-20 season.

Grace also holds the major championship record with a 62 in the third round at Royal Birkdale in the 2017 British Open.
