At least 2,000 patients to receive new coronavirus therapy in clinical trial

At least 2,000 patients to receive new coronavirus therapy in clinical trial”

"Ab8 not only has potential as a therapy for COVID-19, but it also could be used to keep people from getting SARS-CoV-2 infections", said M.D. John Mellors, study's co-author and chief of the Division of Infectious Disease at UPMC and Pitt.

These are man-made antibodies that act like human antibodies in the immune system. They have found the component after analyzing more than 100 billion potential candidates using the viral spike protein as bait.

Ab8 also does not bind to human cells, which is a sign that it won't cause negative side effects in patients.

Scientists administered the drug to hamsters and mice and found out that it is highly effective in preventing COVID-19 infections.

Scientists at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine have isolated "the smallest biological molecule" that "completely and specifically neutralizes" the virus that causes coronavirus.

Nick Cammack, who is leading Covid-19 therapeutics work for Wellcome, said: "Novel antivirals and monoclonal antibodies are among the most exciting and promising treatments for Covid-19 because they are specific to the disease, but they are also traditionally the most expensive".

It was combined with part of the immunoglobulin tail area to create Ab8, without the bulk of a full-size antibody. They have identified small size antibody.

The researchers said that the medicine could be administered as an inhaled drug or intradermally because of its small size.

UPMC and University of Pittsburgh medical researchers announced a "scientific breakthrough" in a Tuesday afternoon news conference that may provide the key to fighting COVID-19. This corresponds to the specificity of an antibody molecule towards a particular virus. This medicine can be used against SARS-Cov-2. According to Dimitrov, he and his team set out to isolate the gene for one or more antibodies that prevent SARS-CoV-2 infection in order to be able to mass-produce a therapeutic antibody which could overcome some of the limitations associated with convalescent plasma therapy.

After its discovery, a team at the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) at Galveston's Center for Biodefense and Emerging Diseases and Galveston National Laboratory, demonstrated that at very low concentrations Ab8 prevented live SARS-CoV-2 virus from entering cells. In mice trials, those treated with Ab8 had 10-fold less of the amount of infectious virus compared to those that were untreated.

Researchers at the University of British Columbia uncovered the unique way Ab8 neutralizes the virus so effectively by using sophisticated electron microscopic techniques.

REGN-COV2, which was created by the USA firm Regeneron, is made up of two monoclonal antibodies (REGN10933 and REGN10987).
