Brexit: Sajid Javid joins Tory rebels refusing to back Boris Johnson’s bill”

David Cameron, prime minister of the United Kingdom at the time of the Brexit referendum, became the last living former British prime minister to express his concerns about the bill, warning hours before the debate that "passing an act of Parliament and then going on to break an worldwide treaty obligation is the very, very last thing you should contemplate".

Cox, previously a strong supporter of Johnson on Brexit, said he wouldn't support the proposal when the House of Commons takes its first vote on the contentious legislation later Monday.

Former chancellor Sajid Javid has said he will not support Boris Johnson's controversial UK Internal Market Bill, which would give ministers powers to break worldwide law.

The EU has demanded Britain scraps the main parts of the bill by the end of September and that, if not, there will be no trade deal at the end of the year to cover everything from vehicle parts to food.

The legislation also sparked angry debate in London, reminiscent of the years of bitter political battles that followed the 2016 shock referendum vote to leave the EU.

Earlier, Mr Johnson's former attorney general Geoffrey Cox came out against the bill, accusing Mr Johnson of doing "unconscionable" damage to Britain's worldwide reputation.

The legislation has come under fire from all five living former prime ministers, including Mr Johnson's immediate predecessors Theresa May and David Cameron, as well as Brexit-backing Tory grandees like former leader Michael Howard and ex-chancellor Norman Lamont.

Britain left the European Union in January but remains bound by the rules of the 27-member bloc until a transition period ends on December 31.

The EU says Johnson's bill would wreck trade talks and propel the United Kingdom towards a messy, no-deal Brexit.

The British government said explicitly last week that it plans to break global law by breaching parts of the Withdrawal Agreement treaty that it signed in January, when it formally left the EU.

"That illusion must be decently despatched".

As a result some custom checks would have to be implemented on goods travelling between Northern Ireland and the rest of the UK.

James summarised that Boris Johnson "has whipped the Conservative party to break the withdrawal agreement with which he won the last general election".

Downing Street last week claimed the Brexit deal was agreed "at pace" and the problems with the aspects of the treaty regarding Northern Ireland were unforeseen.

"Either he wasn't straight with the country about the deal in the first place or he didn't understand it", Miliband said.

He added: "This is his deal". This is his deal, it's his mess, it's his failure. On Monday, Rehman Chisti, MP for Gillingham and Rainham, resigned as a government special envoy on what he called "a matter of principle".

MPs will begin detailed line-by-line scrutiny of the Bill on Tuesday, with votes expected next week on amendments to the Northern Ireland provisions which some Tories may back.

The main battleground in the next four days of debate is likely to be an attempt by Bob Neill, a Conservative lawmaker, to amend the bill to give parliament, not ministers, the power to decide whether to overrule the Brexit treaty.
