Get Ready to Upgrade: iOS 14 Rolls Out Sept. 16”

Apple said it would give developers until next year to adjust to the changes. The company announced today's rollout during its "Time Flies" event on September 15, where it also announced an 8th generation iPad, an all-new iPad Air, Apple Watch Series 6, a budget Watch SE, the Apple One bundled subscription service and Apple Fitness Plus, a special fitness training service. "With beautifully redesigned widgets on the Home Screen, the App Library that automatically organizes all of your apps, and App Clips that are fast and easy to discover, iPhone becomes even more powerful and easier to use".

Another change is a feature called App Clips. App Clips can be scanned from QR codes, NFC tags, or Apple-designed App Clip Codes, plus they can be shared in Messages or accessed from Safari. There are new Memoji options and group chats can be assigned icons with photos, emoji, or Memoji.

Apple's watchOS 7 brings handwashing detection, dance workouts, and sleep tracking features to the Apple Watch. Developers need to get user permission before accessing devices on a local network, limiting access to photos, and providing apps with approximate locations instead of exact locations. Third-party browser and mail apps can be set as default for the first time, and Apple added new AirPods capabilities. On tvOS 14, look for multi-user support for games, new controller support, picture-in-picture, and more.

The all-new operating system will run on the iPhone 6S, iPhone 6S Plus, the original iPhone SE, and everything released since. Among the additions to iOS are home screen widgets, an app library, and less intrusive call notifications. iPadOS gets similar upgrades, in addition to some Apple Pencil-specific features.
