The Canberra route operated as a Singapore-Sydney-Canberra-Singapore "triangle", while Wellington was served by Singapore-Melbourne-Wellington and Wellington-Melbourne-Singapore flights.

These flights will depart from and land in the Changi Airport which aims at boosting revenues for the airline.

The flights will, however, only be open to Singaporean nationals or those resident in the tiny South East Asian nation.

Singapore Airlines now serves Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth in Australia, along with Auckland and Christchurch in New Zealand, for those able to fly.

Notably, beginning this November through February 2021, Australian airline Qantas plans to offer seven sightseeing flights span ing for 12 hours atop Antarctica.

"But it is necessary as we foresee travel demand to remain stunted for a long period of time. We will make an announcement at the appropriate time if we go ahead with these plans".

Singapore Airlines has pulled the plug on its Canberra service as part of a global downsizing of operations due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and is unlikely to return even if worldwide travel restrictions ease. The International Air Transport Association said in a statement that "this is the biggest crisis that the industry has ever faced", and forecasts the almost 290 airlines it represents globally to lose $US314 billion this year alone.

It is understood the airline is also looking to agree with the local Singapore Tourism Board to give interested passengers the chance to use local tourism credits given out by the government to pay for the flights.

It warned of a long road to recovery as the group comes to terms with operating with 50% of its capacity at the end of financial year 2020/21 versus pre-Covid levels.

He warned that the "next few weeks would be some of the toughest in the history of the SIA Group as some of our friends and colleagues leave the company".

SIA has yet to release prices for its round trip tickets although a survey of just over 300 Singaporeans did indicate that 75% would be willing to pay for such "entertainment".
