Ferrari Portofino M brings 'Modificata' to the brand's GT convertible

Ferrari Portofino M brings 'Modificata' to the brand's GT convertible”

Set to commence European deliveries in the second quarter of 2021, the Portofino M will land in left-hand drive markets first, where pricing will kick off from 206,000 euros, or roughly AU$333,498.

The "M" in the model's name stands for "Modificata" or "modified", a designation used by Ferrari to highlight cars that have received an injection of technological innovation.

A turbocharged 3.9-litre V8 engine powers the Portofino M. This engine, which forms part of the family of engines that won "International Engine of the Year" on several occasions, has been optimised to deliver 456kW and 760Nm.

On the one hand, this has allowed Ferrari to use longer gear ratios in the higher gears, which helps keep fuel consumption and emissions down, while on the other, adopting a steeper torque curve through the rev range in the lower gears for a feeling of smooth and powerful pick-up.

And finally, Ferrari has added some new electronic driver-assist features to the Portofino M's list of options.

The landmark 0-100km/h time of 3.5 seconds remains unchanged however, as does the 320km/h top speed. There's a more substantial 1.0sec improvement on the 0-124mph time, down to 9.8sec. Another update is the five-position Manettino that adds a Race mode, an absolute first for a GT spider from Maranello.

A little over three years later, we already enjoy the online reveal (as is customary these days) of its evolutionary sibling, the Portofino M. While the styling enhancements are nothing to write home about - the open-top brother of the Roma already looked as good as it gets - the same can not be said about the technical upgrades.

Ferrari Portofino M

The Portofino M's styling largely matches the outgoing Portofino, save for some new fascias at both ends.

"It's nearly a combination of a coupe and a spider - we wanted to perfectly integrate the roof into a continued line reminiscent of a fastback auto", explained chief design officer Flavio Manzoni.

The hardtop roof is a carryover from the previous Portofino, able to be opened and closed in 15 seconds and capable of being opened while driving up to speeds of 40km/h.

Inside, Ferrari made some design updates as well with their choices of materials, but overall the interior is largely carried over such as the segmented dashboard, the magnesium seats, and the technology side.

"[The target demographic is] people that love driving cars with the top off, who want something sophisticated from a technical and performance perspective, but without compromising on the comfort on board", Enrico Galliera, Chief Commercial and Marketing Officer, told media. "The passenger can also have an optional 7" colour full HD and Full Touch display.

Drivers also are assisted by an enhanced suite of tech helpers, which now includes blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, a surround-view camera system, traffic-sign recognition, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, and adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go capability.

Ferrari has unveiled the Portofino M, which rolls in as a mid-life replacement for the three-year old Portofino.
