Covid: UK does not have enough testing capacity, Boris Johnson admits”

The Prime Minister's comments came as the Government said that as of 9am on Wednesday, there had been a further 3,991 lab-confirmed cases of coronavirus in the United Kingdom - the highest daily tally since May 8.

In an ideal world, I would like to test absolutely everybody that wants a test immediately.

He told the BBC Radio 4 Today programme: "I think we are getting to the point where potentially we are losing our ability to accurately track the virus. I very much doubt that the financial consequences would be anything but disastrous", Johnson told MPs.

"And so when I see people arguing against the rule of six, or saying the Government is coming in too hard on individual liberties, I sympathise with that but we must beat this disease".

On 16 September, Johnson said the Government was doing everything possible to dodge a second nationwide lockdown.

Earlier this week, Home Secretary Priti Patel was asked whether she would alert the police about her neighbours if they broke the rules, replying: "I don't spend my time looking into people's gardens".

"Under new rules, licensed pubs, bars and restaurants in the area will have to close at 11pm â€" and meetings with other people indoors will not be allowed, including for extended households.

And the entire nation could face curfews on going out if the tough new laws - which could see people fined £100 - don't work. "We don't have weeks".

Local lockdowns are being used instead of sweeping national measures in areas where there are spikes in fresh cases.

This is to stop the spread of the virus and to stop the R rate from rising further.

Asked directly whether the country now had enough testing capacity, Mr Johnson told the Commons liaison committee: "The short answer is no we don't".

Trade union Unison said call volumes to the NHS 111 line had increased significantly and a hospital in Bolton - a coronavirus hotspot - urged people to stay away from its A&E unit unless strictly necessary after almost 100 turned up to request Covid-19 tests.

'We must expect those infections, proportionately, to lead to mortality'.

It comes after pictures showed thousands of freshers piling into university were breaking the rule of six and risking spreading the virus.

He promised there would be capacity for 500,000 tests a day by the end of October.

Government ministers reportedly claim that around a quarter of the current testing capacity is being taken up by members of the public who do not meet eligibility criteria.

Christmas we want to protect, and we want everyone to have a fantastic Christmas. At the moment, the United Kingdom has a reported capacity of 375,000, but is carrying out around 230,000 tests per day.

Speaking to AFP from the Ukrainian-Belarusian border, one of ultra-Orthodox pilgrims, Itsik Cohen, says the believers are hoping for divine intervention.

The Prime Minister noted: "Everything is being done that we possibly can to increase testing capacity" which includes "automation, batch testing, securing supplies abroad".

Referencing the 1978 film, National Lampoon's Animal House, he added: "But I think what is reasonable for anyone to do is if they think there is a serious threat to public health as a result of their neighbour's activities - if there is some huge kind of Animal House party taking place, as I am sure, hot tubs and so forth - and there is a serious threat to public health, then it's reasonable for the authorities to know".

People in care homes would also be a priority, while schools could be considered, Mr Buckland said.

On the Brexit negotiations, Johnson told the committee: "We had an opportunity for them [the EU] to lift this issue of third-country listings..."

A staggering 74 per cent of parents who needed a Covid test for their kid in the past fortnight said they struggled to get one, a snap poll from Netmums found.
