Fourth staff member at Pembroke high school tests positive for COVID-19

A high school in Pembroke, Ontario has been closed after three cases of COVID-19 were detected at the school.

The school won't re-open until they get the green light from public health officials.

In an emailed statement to CBC News, Renfrew County District School Board spokesperson Jonathan Laderoute said the closure will remain in place until further notice.

The board says people who aren't contacted by public health are considered to be at a low risk of exposure.

The health unit says some staff members are showing symptoms, but nothing yet from students.

Thursday afternoon RCDHU tested 98 individuals, 83 staff and 15 students.

The Renfrew County and District Health Unit is reporting a 3rd case of COVID-19 at a school. Nothing yet amongst the student body, but we do expect a few more cases.

All in-person classes at Fellowes High School in Pembroke, Ont., were halted Wednesday after the latest case was linked to two previous ones, also involving staff members.

Students at Fellowes High School told CTV News Ottawa on Wednesday that some staff and students were not wearing face masks while in the school during the first week back.

It also noted that staff congregating could be an issue, and urged that those "involved in the direct supervision of students should be encouraged to minimize their time (outside school hours) inside the school building, especially in shared spaces like staff rooms and department work rooms".

"The harsh lesson learned from this outbreak is that we need to remind ourselves how each and every one of us should conduct ourselves in the time of COVID-19", Dr. Robert Cushman, the Acting Medical Officer of Health.
